They were very happy to perform a community service and are looking forward to another project before the end of the school year. The Recreation Director at Littleton Senior Citizens Center was very appreciative of the boys' efforts. This project taught the boys a new way to relate to the community and that it is a very positive feeling to do a kindness for a stranger.

Family Literacy Day
Granite State Reading has sponsored a very successful Literacy Day each year for the past five years. With
participation numbers soaring to more than 5000 people from more than 90 NH villages, towns, and cities,
there is a need to expand to locations beyond the original Merrimack Valley schools. Littleton High School
and Career and Technical Center will be a site for this year’s April 14th New Hampshire Family Literacy Day.
Although the event will last from 9AM to 12 noon, the memories we create and the books we distribute that day
will last much longer.
With such success in the southern part of the state, families of Northern New Hampshire and Vermont will
receive the same opportunity to celebrate literacy. Last year over 12,000 new, quality, children’s books were
given free to children attending the Merrimack Valley event. EVERY book was purchased by NH businesses-
-$1.00 donated equals one book given away. Most of the programs were in-kind donations by organizations or
individuals, such as the SPCA, NHPTV, Kevin Skarupa from WMUR, and Ronald McDonald’s Magic Show.
Others were brought by quality venues at a reduced rate, such as Squam Science Center, and the W.I.L.D.
Center and Zoological Park of New England.
SO…how can you help establish the first annual North Country Literacy Day at Littleton High School and
Career and Technical Center?
Tax-exempt monetary donations can be allocated in two ways.
• EVERY dollar you donate will purchase a new children’s book. The book will have a label affixed
prominently to the front of the book stating you generosity. For example, This Book is a Gift

Student Parent Square Dance Permission slips
3rd- 6th GRADE STUDENT-PARENT SQUARE DANCE
During the month of January, students in grades 3-6 will be studying and practicing the American Folk Art tradition of square dancing. This square dance unit will culminate in a joint student-parent square dance on Thursday, February 23rd-- grade 3 from 5:00 to 5:45; grade 4 from 6:00 to 6:45; grade 5 and 6 from 7:00 to 7:45. Parents with students in different grade levels are not required to attend more than one performance, but may have their children perform at one dance. Please just let me know which performance they are going to attend, so on Thursday’s rehearsal they match up with a partner and square.
We are excited to announce that our caller for this presentation will be Mr. Lester Bradley from Thornton, NH. Mr. Bradley has been calling square dances all over NH for well over 20 years. In fact, Mr. Bradley was named part of the folk art group representing New Hampshire for the Smithsonian Institution. He called square dances to people from all around the country and world for two weeks during the summer of 1999 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The students will be presenting 3 dances to the parents; Duck for the Oyster or Hinky Dinky Parlez-vous, Golden Slippers, and/or Crooked Stovepipe. After this, the audience will be invited to participate.
To keep with the tradition of an old time barn dance, the gymnasium will be decorated as a farm with artwork the students have made. Everyone is encouraged to dress with a bit of farm or western flair.
We are looking forward to a wonderful time. I sincerely hope you and your family can attend and enjoy the fun.

Attached below you will find a permission/attendance slip. I need to know who will be attending the dance, so that partners and squares can be set up for the performance. Please return by February 10th
